Armenian Symbols in Jewelry: Meanings & History
What do Armenian symbols in jewelry mean?
Armenian jewelry carries symbols with documented histories spanning more than 1,500 years: the Arevakhatch eternity sign (eternal life), the khachkar cross-stone (faith and remembrance), the Tree of Life (continuity across generations) and the pomegranate (abundance and good fortune). Each appears in Armenian manuscripts, church carvings and folk art long before modern jewelry adopted them.
The Armenian eternity symbol (Arevakhatch)
Meaning: eternal life, continuity, the enduring spirit of the Armenian people.
History: the Arevakhatch — literally "sun cross" — is a rotating wheel of curved rays used in Armenian art since at least the 5th century. It appears on medieval manuscripts, church walls, altars and khachkars across the Armenian highlands, and survived centuries of upheaval as a quiet mark of identity.
Worn today: the most popular Armenian symbol in jewelry — as pendants, signet rings and bracelets — worn both in Armenia and across the diaspora as a connection to heritage. At Nayiri we craft it in our Haverj Collection ("haverj" means eternity), including the Eternity Signet Ring and Eternity Sign Bracelet.
The khachkar and the Armenian cross
Meaning: faith, remembrance, protection.
History: khachkars are carved memorial cross-stones unique to Armenian culture — thousands survive, no two identical, the oldest dating to the 9th century. The art of khachkar carving is inscribed on UNESCO's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The Armenian cross itself is distinctive: its arms bloom outward like branches, a "flowering cross" symbolising living faith.
Worn today: as cross pendants drawing on khachkar ornament — see our Armenian Cross necklaces in the Ani Collection, in solid gold or silver.
The Tree of Life
Meaning: family, rootedness, the bond between generations.
History: the Tree of Life appears in Armenian art from antiquity — in Urartian bronzes, medieval manuscript borders and carpet patterns — representing the link between earth and heaven, ancestor and descendant.
Worn today: often chosen as a family gift — for mothers, grandmothers, or children leaving home.
The pomegranate
Meaning: abundance, fertility, good fortune — the best-loved fruit symbol of Armenia.
History: in Armenian tradition a pomegranate's seeds stand for prosperity; brides once threw a pomegranate to break against a wall, the scattered seeds promising children and plenty. It remains a national emblem in art and film.
Worn today: as charms and pendants, and one of the most-requested motifs for custom pieces — we regularly engrave and sculpt it in our custom orders atelier.
Bird letters (Trchnagir)
Meaning: the Armenian alphabet itself, rendered as art — identity in a single letter.
History: medieval Armenian scribes illuminated manuscript initials as birds and mythical creatures, a style called trchnagir ("bird writing"). The Armenian alphabet, created by Mesrop Mashtots in 405 AD, is itself a symbol of cultural survival.
Worn today: as initial pendants — a favourite diaspora gift, pairing a loved one's initial with a thousand-year-old script. Ask us about custom initial pieces.
What our collection names mean
- Nayiri (Նայիրի) — the ancient name for the Armenian highlands, "land of rivers"; also a beloved feminine name. Our Nayiri Collection is our signature line.
- Ani (Անի) — the medieval Armenian capital, the legendary "city of 1,001 churches." The Ani Collection draws on its carved ornament and filigree.
- Sevan (Սևան) — Armenia's great alpine lake. The Sevan Collection captures its waves — as does Alik (Ալիք), "wave," in our Alik rings and earrings.
- Haverj (Հավերժ) — "eternity," home of our eternity-symbol pieces.
- Yerek (Երեք) — "three": trinity, completeness, and the three colours of gold in the Yerek Collection.
- Arev (Արև) & Lusin (Լուսին) — "sun" and "moon," names carried by individual pieces.
- Seda, Siran, Gohar, Armine… — classic Armenian names; Siran means "beloved," Gohar means "jewel."
Frequently asked questions
What is the Armenian eternity symbol called?
Arevakhatch (Արևախաչ), meaning "sun cross." It is a rotating wheel of curved rays symbolising eternal life, used in Armenian art since at least the 5th century.
Is it appropriate to wear Armenian symbols if I'm not Armenian?
Yes — Armenian jewelers have always made these pieces to be worn and shared. The symbols carry universal meanings (eternity, family, abundance), and buying from makers in Armenia directly supports the living tradition.
What is a khachkar?
A hand-carved Armenian memorial stone bearing a cross surrounded by intricate ornament. No two are alike, the oldest date to the 9th century, and the carving art is recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage.
What is the best Armenian symbol for a gift?
The eternity sign is the most popular — meaningful for anniversaries, graduations and new beginnings. The pomegranate suits weddings and new homes; a Trchnagir initial letter is the classic personal gift for diaspora family.
Where can I buy Armenian eternity symbol jewelry?
Nayiri Jewelry handcrafts eternity-sign necklaces, rings and bracelets in 14-karat solid gold and 925 silver in our Yerevan atelier, shipping worldwide. Each piece is made to order by artisans who relocated to Armenia and rebuilt their craft here.
